Surf Encuentro Dominican Republic
The Encuentro surf break is one of the best surf breaks you’ll find in all of the Caribbean. Located 10 minutes west of the town of Cabarete and 20 minutes east of Puerto Plata, Encuentro is a classic A-Frame wave that forms an elite, world-class beach break.
The consistency at Encuentro is another factor that make it such a legendary spot. Winter is the best for consistent waves, and the summer tradewinds often blow the wave to pieces by 10-11am. During the early morning hours, however, there is almost always a morning when you can get out and longboard for an early morning dawn patrol.
More than the surf itself, however, the scene on the beach is a tropical dream of every societal drop out. Rows of surf schools and plywood beach bars sit tucked beneath a canopy of trees, and some of the schools appear closer to frat houses than regular, commercial operations. Ping pong tables and weightlifting equipment sits right next to stacks of surfboards, and it’s all too easy to sit on the shore, drink a bottle of Presidente beer, and register three or four different sessions over the course of a single day. Then, wake up the next day and repeat the same scene. As you can imagine it’s a place which can be very tough to leave.
Seeing as I was surfing and enjoying the waves and not taking photos on the beach, take a look at this Encuentro surf guide for more photos and info.
